Reasons and countermeasures for cable water ingress

Hits:43 Pub:2025-05-03

Usually, water ingress into cables is a serious problem. Sometimes you think you have taken good waterproof measures, but the cables still get water ingress. So how does the cable get wet? Below, the editor will introduce the reasons and countermeasures for cable water ingress.

There may be the following reasons for cable water ingress:
1. The newly purchased power cable is sealed with plastic sealing sleeves at both ends, but after using it for a period of time, the rest is wrapped in plastic paper and tied with a rope. The sealing is not good, and over time, water vapor will seep into the cable.

2. The cable head wrapped in plastic paper sometimes gets soaked in water, allowing water to enter the cable; Sometimes the outer sheath may rupture during traction and threading.

3. Failure to make cable heads in a timely manner after laying resulted in unsealed cable ports being exposed to air for a long time, even submerged in water, causing a large amount of water vapor to enter the cable.

We have understood the reasons for cable water ingress, and prevention measures should be taken to prevent cable water ingress. The following measures should be taken:

1. The cable head should be sealed with a sawn off cable end. Whether stacked or laid, it should be sealed with plastic (using a cable specific sealing sleeve) to prevent moisture from seeping in.

2. After laying the wires, the production of cable heads should be carried out in a timely manner.

3. When purchasing cables, it is necessary to choose manufacturers with excellent quality. Due to impurities and pores in insulation being the starting point of water treeing, the quality of cables is crucial in preventing water treeing aging.

4. Strengthening the management of cable head production process: Once the cable is submerged in water, the cable head is often the first to experience breakdown. Therefore, good wire head production can extend the overall life of the cable. When peeling off the semiconductor layer of a cable, make several vertical lines on the semiconductor layer and then peel off the semiconductor like peeling sugarcane. But when using a knife to cut too deeply, it can damage the insulation layer and provide opportunities for the growth of water trees.
